BUDGET PASSES
In the face of a $2 billion budget deficit,
huge cuts and lowering of the eligibility level were being proposed. Yet child care survived with no cuts - an incredible accomplishment.
The hard work of ACCA, its members, and supporters of funding for low income working families made the difference.
In addition to avoiding any cuts, the budget bill says that "it is the intent of the legislature to fully fund child care caseloads and not create a waiting list". This means that the Governor and legislature want to provide the funds necessary to address any caseload increases this coming year. This is great news - the Arizona Republic listed child care among this years "winners". But as we all know too well, the rates the State pays are dismally low. When the State's economy turns around ACCA will again seek to address the inadequate State payments.
